Reiki is a form of energy healing which originated in Japan in the 20th century by a man named Mikao Usui after a spiritual experience on Mount Kurama. He developed a system for using Reiki as an alternative healing therapy.

Reiki is the universal life force energy which is present in every living organism. "Rei" means Universal. "Ki" means life force. Reiki energy is everywhere and available to everyone. This energy is known as "Ki" to the Japanese, "Chi" to the Chinese, "Prana" to the yogis and "Holy Spirit" to much of western world. Ancient Eastern cultures learned to use this energy for healing thousands of years ago. Ki energy is in and around all living things. Reiki is one of several practices which have been developed to enhance the flow of this healing life-giving energy.

Everyone has access to Reiki energy and we have been instinctively and unconsciously using this energy to provide comfort since we were children. For example, whether we have a headache or a scraped knee, we instinctively place our hand over the painful area. By doing so we are unconsciously tapping into the healing power of Reiki.

A Reiki Practitioner is someone who is certified in Reiki and has received attunement from a Reiki Master Teacher. The attunement is necessary to open energy channels, which allow the practitioner to be more effective in channeling Reiki energy for healing.

Pamela Miles, Reiki Master and author of, REIKI The Comprehensive Guide, writes:

"...Reiki can return us to balanced functioning on every level- physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and even social-regardless of our age or state of health." (page 8)

Reiki treatment should not be used as a substitute for the consultation of a physician or a psychotherapist." End of quote.

Reiki beneficial in promoting relaxation and a sense of peace and well-being. Reiki may be helpful in relieving symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, migraines, pain, emotional trauma, nausea, PMS, PTSD, insomnia, digestive problems and medication withdrawal, just to name a few. Reiki is growing in popularity and is being incorporated into holistic healthcare programs by some of our prestigious hospitals such as Cleveland Clinic and John Hopkins.
